Los Altos Psychotherapy - Frequently Asked Questions
At Los Altos Psychotherapy, we help adults who feel overwhelmed, emotionally shut down, lonely, or stuck in patterns that no longer serve them. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationship struggles, or burnout, we’ll work with you to uncover what’s underneath and help you start feeling more like yourself again.
We also work with adolescents on a limited basis, depending on therapist availability and fit. Teens today face unique pressures — academic stress, social anxiety, identity exploration, and emotional overwhelm, often without knowing how to talk about it. If your teen is struggling or seems disconnected, therapy can offer a safe space for them to open up, build emotional tools, and feel more grounded in themselves.
You don’t need to be in crisis to start therapy. If you’ve been thinking “I feel numb and unmotivated,” “why is life so hard,” or “I just want to feel better,” therapy can help. It’s a space to explore what’s happening internally — even when you don’t have the words yet.
You can schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation directly using [this link]. It’s a relaxed, no-pressure conversation where we’ll learn more about what you’re going through and help match you with a therapist who feels like the right fit. We’re here to help you feel comfortable taking the next step.
The first session is a gentle starting point. Your therapist will ask about what’s been going on, what brought you in, and what you hope to get out of therapy. You don’t need to prepare anything — we’ll go at your pace.
Los Altos Psychotherapy is primarily focused on adult individuals. Some therapists may work with teens or couples on a case-by-case basis — feel free to reach out and we’ll help you determine if we’re the right fit or refer you to someone who is.
Yes. We offer secure, HIPAA-compliant teletherapy for clients anywhere in California, as well as in-person sessions at our Los Altos office. Many clients choose online therapy for convenience and comfort.
Most sessions are 50 minutes long and take place weekly. Some clients choose to meet more or less often depending on their goals, availability, and what’s going on in their lives.
We understand that life happens. We ask for at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule a session. Late cancellations or missed appointments may be charged the full session fee.
Fees vary depending on the therapist you work with, ranging from $180-$400 per 50 minute session. We’ll walk you through the details during your consultation so there are no surprises.
Los Altos Psychotherapy is an out-of-network provider, which means we don’t bill insurance directly. However, we can provide a monthly superbill for you to submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
Every plan is different. We recommend calling your insurance provider and asking:
- Do you reimburse for out-of-network mental health services?
- What percentage of the session cost is covered? What percentage of the session cost is covered? Or is there a fixed reimbursement per session?
- Is there a deductible I need to meet first?
That’s completely okay — many clients start therapy because something just doesn’t feel right. You might be saying things like “I’m tired all the time,” “I feel disconnected from everyone,” or “I don’t know why I feel this way.” Therapy can help you make sense of those feelings and begin to heal.
There’s no one-size-fits-all timeline. Some people come for a few months to work on a specific issue, while others stay longer to explore deeper emotional patterns and create meaningful, lasting change. We’ll talk about your goals and check in regularly to make sure therapy is helping you move forward.
You don’t need to choose alone. During your consultation call, we’ll ask about your concerns, preferences, and goals so we can match you with a therapist who’s a good fit. The relationship between you and your therapist is one of the most important parts of the process. And if one of our therapists in not a good fit we are happy to refer to you to one of our trusted colleagues in the area.
